Highlights from G. F. Handel’s Magnificent Opus
Led by Music Director Andreea Fagen and the RPC Choir
With Guest Soloists and a String Quartet
Third Sunday of Advent, December 15, 2024 @ 9:45 AM
Rev. E. Nicholas Van Gombos
Some introductory thoughts: The year was 1741 and a British court composer under the patronage of King George II was on the clock. George Frederic Handel, not taking the post for granted, worked feverishly on the score for a 3-part oratorio to be called “Messiah” – a lyrical unfolding of what we know in biblical study as ‘salvation history.’ He must have sensed his own salvation on the line for reportedly penned the whole work in 24 days – the first section in a mere 6.
It is performed in any and all times – but peak season – is Advent and Christmas. And in this week it will be our joy to revel in highlights. You will want to be here!

The First Sunday of Advent is the day to start the ‘church calendar’ over again. That’s why Advent – which means variously the coming, or the revealing – is a celebration of God’s being among us in the person of Jesus. We’re encouraged in these days to ‘Wake up – Be alert – Get ready.’ And following the prompts of our ancestors, we focus on thoughts of last things on this first day. You’ll want to be in worship this Sunday!

The theme of this year’s General Assembly was “Live Into Hope” from the hymn of the same name. Why was this chosen? The Stated Clerk saw it as an opportunity. The denomination has been in a space of lament from COVID and declining numbers, while holding hope for the future. Now it is time to live into that hope. This Sunday we will explore Mark 10: 17-31, the story of the rich young man, the General Assembly and how they might inform this church’s theme of “Come Grow With Us.”

“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” has been a focus for summer and concludes this week with reflections on one of Jesus’ most poignant parables. In Matthew 25 he points to a ‘last judgement’ and offers the criteria for who will be a welcome sheep and those a rejected goat. In very concrete, human terms, It all comes down to how we have treated the least of his children – for as we treated them, we honored him. So significant is this message that our national leaders have suggested we might want to sign on as a “Matthew 25” congregation making the service, mission and change agent posture a hallmark for congregational life. With a sermon entitled –“For the Least of These,” comes an invitation to consider how we can individually and especially together be known as servant oriented people. The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will also be offered this day to anchor our faith and reinforce our actions.
Hope you may join as we reflect this week – and determine what you conclude!

Mindful of the secular tag for this coming one as Labor Day Sunday we’ll reflect upon Jesus’ implication to be mindful what we labor for. It comes in his affirmation, “I am the Bread of Life, whosoever comes to me will neither hunger nor thirst.” With a sermon title –“Check Your Bearings,” comes an invitation to consider what we value and what we aspire to.

“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” continues for a couple more weeks as a focus for summer – through September 8 to be precise.
As we approach the summer season’s end, we’ll reflect upon a curious scene from Jesus’ life with the disciples – an unexpected encounter in another country which leads to a broadened message for them and for us. The story as told by Matthew in his chapter15, recounts the time when a woman from Syro-phonenicia (modern Lebanon) accosts the Lord. At first he rebuffs her. But, on further exchange, she reveals her faith and in so doing creates a challenge to rethink who is ‘us’ and who ‘them.’ What are the meanings and messages from a compelling Gospel account which engenders an unexpected responsibility? “The Disciples’ Foreign Debt” is the sermon title. And what difference does it make?

“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” has been an overarching theme through this summer. As we reach the season’s end, we’ll reflect upon one of the best-known scenes from Jesus’ life with the disciples – a source of inspiration and humor through countless years. The story as told by Matthew in his chapter14, recounts the time when his followers saw him coming to them on the surface of the sea. Or does it…? What are the possible meanings and messages from a compelling Gospel account? “Jesus Walked Where?” is the sermon title. And what difference does it make?

Rev. E. Nicholas Van Gombos
Readings: Psalm 119:97-104; Luke 18:1-8
“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” is a theme with which we roll along as this summer proceeds. Luke in his chapter 18. 1-8, shares a rather direct parable from our Lord which I was tempted to term: “The Power of Persistent Pestering.” Among all of Jesus’ stories this one about an exchange between a desperate widow and a complacent judge is compellingly puzzling. It is about praying constantly, and would seem to imply a contrast between a tuned out magistrate and an in tune God, though that comes out too glib for my taste.
In the end, prayer is the instruction – and “Persistence Pays” seems a more suitable summary to guide our dignified reflections. BUT, that image of ‘pestering’ is hard to set aside…

“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” continue to get our attention
through this summer. Among all of Jesus’ stories it’s often the shortest and simplest which can give us pause. Matthew 13. 44-46, passes on two such parables back to back, about a treasure found in a field, and a pearl of great value. The one is a kind of lead in to the other, prompting us to first ponder the possibility of surprising grace – and then stew on what we most highly value. Is it things, or is it relationships – people?

“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” carries us on through this summer. Among all of Jesus’ stories the one prompted by an antagonist’s query gets attention on several levels. We know it as “The Good Samaritan” offered by Jesus in the context of what one must do to inherit eternal life? More specifically, this compelling tale draws us into a question which in essence would be ‘how do I become engaged with another’s story?’ It comes to a head with the attempted dodge: ‘Who is my Neighbor?’
Hope you may join as we reflect on that compelling question: “Who is my Neighbor?”

“The Stories of Jesus: Then and Now” carries us on through this summer. In the Bible the theme of being lost and then found recurs over and again. Probably because it is a prevalent human experience and the Bible so often speaks directly to our condition. This Sunday we’ll hear anew about an encounter one fellow had with Jesus – with a very hopeful outcome! By means of a note on my college freshman roommates’ knapsack – we’ll let Zacchaeus offer guidance from his life then – to ours today.
